Ferroalloy sellers look to limit discounts as 2014 talks start 

NEW YORK — Ferroalloys fixed contract talks have begun for 2014, with market participants still predicting a predominance of formula-based deals and sellers trying to limit discounting. 

Some consumers have yet to enter the market, market participants told AMM, although they agreed that negotiations should be in full swing within the next two weeks.

Felman's electricity hearing set for Dec. 

NEW YORK - The West Virginia Public Service Commission has scheduled evidentiary hearings for Felman Production LLC's application for a 10-year special-rate electricity deal for Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 in Charleston, WVa.

The company claims the requested rate would allow it to resume silicomanganese production at its New Haven, WVa. plant as it would "allow it to weather the cycles of the commodity markets in which it operates."

West Virginia regulators will hold next month a public hearing on US silicomanganese producer Felman Production's request for a 10-year special electricity contract the company says is needed to restart at least two of three idled furnaces at the New Haven plant.

Sometimes one bad apple can spoil the bunch. 

In this case, the bunch would be energy intensive industrial consumers who want to take advantage of a 2012 bill to allow those customers a special rate for electricity.

And some would consider Century Aluminum to be the bad apple.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Felman Production representatives on Friday defended the company's request for a special power contract, saying the plan is structured differently and presents far less risk to consumers than a proposal pushed by Century Aluminum last year. 

Felman wants the state Public Service Commission to approve a 10-year special power rate for its New Haven steel additive manufacturing plant.
