Felman's special rate proposal may hit power customers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Mason County manufacturer Felman Production is using a law intended to help restart Century Aluminum's Ravenswood plant to seek a special power rate for its idled New Haven plant.

And like the failed rate plan Century asked state regulators to approve last year, Felman's proposal could shift some of the company's power costs to other Appalachian Power customers.

US ferrosilicon availability questioned

NEW YORK - Ferrosilicon market participants have cast doubt on U.S. producers' ability to cover the needs of domestic steel producers, although imports are likely to make up the balance.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) voted to continue an anti-dumping investigation into ferrosilicon imports from Russia and Venezuela, issuing a preliminary determination that the domestic industry could be materially injured by such imports [amm.com, Aug. 30).

 - Proposed Special Rate Designed to Enable Felman to Restart Production - 

NEW HAVEN, W. Va. (August 30, 2013) – Felman Production, LLC (“Felman” or the “Company”) submitted an application today to West Virginia’s Public Service Commission for a 10-year special rate electric contract. If approved, the special rate would enable Felman to restart production and save up to 200 jobs, while ensuring other West Virginia ratepayers do not incur any higher cost than they would incur if Felman were forced to shut down permanently.

Felman seeks New Haven power deal

NEW YORK - Felman Production LLC said it will be able to restart silicomanganese production at its New Haven, W.Va., plant if its request for a 10-year special-rate electricity contract is approved by the state's Public Service Commission (PSC).

The company applied for the special rate Aug. 30, claiming the deal would ensure other West Virginia ratepayers do not incur any higher costs than if Felman were forced to shut down permanently.

Silicomanganese market eyes Nucor tender

NEW YORK - Silicomanganese market participants are eyeing a Nucor Corp. tender that represents one of the first major inquiries since producer Felman Production LLC suspended operations.

Nucor reportedly has released a request for quota-lions for up to 3,000 tons of silicomanganese for fourth quarter delivery to three of its mills. The company could not be reached for comment.
